History
he early history of The Smoker Inn has been eroded by time but the building is believed to have been erected in the days of the first Elizabeth, whether it is a little older than that or a little younger is a matter only of academic interest. The Smoker Inn has been altered at many periods in history but retains that mellow pristine authenticity which is inseparable from old buildings which have been carefully tended and sympathetically treated.
It was originally called The Griffin and is not named after the tobacco habits of its early users but after a horse. The first Lord deTabley, who raised the Cheshire Yeomanry as a means of defence against the threatened invasion of Napoleon, owned a white charger called “Smoker”, bred as a racehorse by the Prince Regent, and renamed the inn as a memorial to the animal.
